Vietnam wants to further develop the traditional relations of friendship and cooperation with India, said Vietnam National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong during his talks with Speaker of India’s House of the People, Somnath Chatterjee in Hanoi on March 23.

Mr Trong welcomed Mr Chatterjee’s visit, considering it a good chance for the two legislative bodies to boost comprehensive cooperation in the coming time.

The Vietnam National Assembly and the Indian Parliament should boost cooperation and exchanges to make their operations more effective, said Mr Trong.

He recalled the time-honoured friendship between the two countries fostered by President Ho Chi Minh and Jawaharland Nehru and said bilateral relations have been developing well since the two countries established their diplomatic ties 35 years ago.

Mr Trong thanked India for supporting Vietnam’s entry into the World Trade Organisation, its current bid to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and its activities at multilateral forums.

The Indian parliamentary speaker expressed India’s deep feelings towards Vietnam.

“Vietnam holds an important position in Indian people’s hearts,” said Mr Chatterjee.

He congratulated Vietnam on the significant achievements made by Vietnamese people during the Doi Moi (Renewal) process, particularly in socio-economic development and poverty reduction. He spoke highly of the Vietnam National Assembly’s renewed operation in recent times, which he said has made significant contributions to the country’s development.

However, the Indian guest said bilateral ties have not yet matched their potential, particularly in trade exchanges which fetched merely more than US$1 billion in 2006.

India has great potential for capital, science and technology, bio-technology, modern equipment and management experience and is ready to help Veitnam in these areas, said the Indian parliamentary speaker.

Mr Trong agreed with Mr
Chatterjee’s proposal and expressed his belief that bilateral cooperation will further develop in the coming time.

The two legislative bodies should encourage their governments to adopt measures to boost comprehensive cooperation between the two countries, especially in economics, trade and investment, said Mr Trong.

The two sides agreed to support each other at regional and international forums, particularly in the international parliamentarian alliance. They agreed to continue to implement the agreements reached at the 13th session of the Vietnam-India Joint Committee held in New Dehli in February 2007.

Speaking at a joint press conference held after the talks, host and guest affirmed that the talks were successful, representing a new landmark in the relations between the two countries and between the two legislative bodies in particular.
