Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) Cao Duc Phat has asked the northern mountainous and north central regions to focus on rice production to increase the annual output of staples by 2 percent from now to 2015.

Mr Phat made the suggestion during an online conference on July 8 with authorities from 17 provinces in the two regions rated as the poorest in the country.

The growth rate of rice production set by the minister for the regions from 2015-2020 is between 1.2 and 1.5 percent a year.

He called for further investment in growing maize and industrial crops, including tea and rubber, to improve farmers’ incomes and ensure food security.

Mr Phat also recommended that local administrations take precautions to cope with dificulties in planting crops and raising animals during the winter season.
