After making many outstanding socio-economic achievements, Vietnam is now in the spotlight, both regionally and internationally, said Uruguay President José Muijica while receiving the newly-appointed Vietnamese Ambassador to Uruguay Nguyen Van Dao.

Mr. Mujica underlined the importance of cooperation with Vietnam and showed his determination to strengthen bilateral ties.

Ambassador Dao informed President Mujica about Vietnam’s socio-economic situation and its potential for developing the Vietnam-Uruguay relationship.

Also at the reception, both parties talked about President Ho Chi Minh’s visit to Uruguay’s capital during his long journey to find a way to national salvation.

The President, who used to be a guerilla, said that he was very impressed by Vietnam’s heroic history and said that outstanding Vietnamese people such as President Ho Chi Minh and General Vo Nguyen Giap are symbols of Vietnam’s struggle for national independence.

Since Vietnam and Uruguay officially established diplomatic relationship in 1999, both countries have strengthen their relationship through Uruguay’s former President Tabare Vazquez’s visit to Hanoi in 2007 and Vietnamese State Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan’s visit to the South American country in 2009.

However, two-way trade turnover still hovers around US$30 a year, far from matching the two countries’ potential.
