Vietnam has obtained important achievements in the renewal process but still is a poor nation which needs cooperation and help from international friends, including Ukraine, said Chairman of National Assembly Nguyen Phu Trong during his talks with visiting Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament Volodymyr Lutvyn in Hanoi on December 6.

He expressed his delight at recent positive changes in Ukraine, hailing the country’s efforts for national stability and development and raising the people’s living conditions. He expressed a wish that Ukraine would continue to register more achievements.

Chairman Volodymyr Lutvyn described his current visit to Vietnam as a vivid manifestation of the continuation of the traditional friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

Members of his delegation to Vietnam showed the Ukrainian Parliament’s attention on promoting friendship and multifaceted cooperation with Vietnam, he added.

In its foreign policy, Ukraine pays special attention to developing friendship and cooperation with Vietnam, Chairman Volodymyr Lutvyn said, adding he hoped the two countries will continue providing mutual support at regional and international forums, as well as Vietnam supporting Ukraine to increase ties with ASEAN.

The Ukrainian chairman also expressed his attention to cooperation in education, describing it as a foundation for bilateral ties in the future. He asked to further increase exchanges and cooperation between the two legislatures, and discuss the establishment of a friendship parliamentarians’ group of the two countries.

Chairman Trong agreed with his guest’s proposal on cooperation between the two countries and legislatures, particularly in economic cooperation, trade, education and training and cooperation at local levels, as well as exchange programmes.

Ukraine has strengths in engineering and industrial equipment for cooperation, while Vietnam can provide agro-forestry products, seafood, apparels and handicrafts, he said.

Two-way trade between the two countries is modest, at about US$200 million in the first nine months of this year.

Also on the same day, Chairman Volodymyr Lutvyn met with students at the National University and visited several cultural and historical sites in Hanoi.

Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament Volodymyr Lutvyn is on an official visit to Vietnam from Dec. 5-8 at the invitation of Chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Phu Trong.
