The Vietnamese sports delegation competed in 12 events at the 16th Asian Games – swimming, shooting, canoeing, chess, dance sport, gymnastics, table-tennis, volley ball, weight-lifting, wushu, and judo on November 13, the first day of the Games’ competitions.

Vietnam’s Lai Thanh Bao and Lai Ly Huynh won the first round in chess, and martial artists Ngo Thi Bich and Phan Van Hau triumphed in the qualifying round for wushu. Judoka Tran Thuy Duy also went through the qualifying round in judo.

Cueist Luong Chi Dung secured a 7-5 victory over his Lebanese rival in the eight-ball event; his fellow teammate Nguyen Phuc Long defeated his Thai rival 7-5.

The Vietnam U23 football squad lost 1-0 to their much stronger rival Iran but still bagged a total of three points after three matches in group B to be one of the 16 teams to enter the next round.

This is the first time since 1975 that the Vietnam football team has qualified for this round in ASIAD.

The Vietnamese footballers will play the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea on November 16.
