Vietnam map “drawn” on rice field in Nghe An

After successfully creating four varieties of herbal rice, a farmer in the central province of Nghe An “drew” a map of Vietnam on his herbal rice field.

The Vietnam Map rice field of farmer Phan Van Hoa, 59, in Vinh Thanh Commune, Yen Thanh District has attracted many people who came to see and took photos of the map.

Mr. Hoa said the idea came to his mind three years ago when he saw naval soldiers arrange pieces of rocks into a Vietnam map.

After 14 households agreed to rent their fields to make the rice map, Hoa bought a map and hired some workers to “draw” the map on the field, with the ratio of 1/1,000.

This unique map was created on 0.5 hectares with 4 colors. The S-shaped strip and the two archipelagoes of Truong Sa (Spratlys) and Hoang Sa (Paracels) were made with the red-colored rice variety.

Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are marked with two yellow stars, made by the yellow-color rice variety. The background of the map was made by the yellow rice variety while the line running around was created by the purple-color rice variety. The map also has a rice flower-shaped logo.

Hoa is a veteran, who has created many varieties of agricultural crops, especially rice. Since 2006, he has successfully bred four rice varieties named Vinh Hoa 1, Vinh Hoa 2, Vinh Hoa 3 and Vinh Hoa 4.

From 1996 to 2000, Hoa studied at the University of Agriculture in Hanoi as an in-service student.
