Almost 70 percent of Israelis say they would accept a Palestinian state after it wins the United Nations' recognition, according to a survey released Wednesday.

The survey was carried out by the Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HU) and the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research in Ramallah.

The poll surveyed 605 Israeli adults, and 1,200 Palestinian adults residing in the West Bank, eastern Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip ahead of the address by Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas this Friday.

If the UN decided to recognize a Palestinian state, 69 percent of Israelis believe Israel should support the UN's decision, 34 percent said to start negotiations with the Palestinians on its implementation. About 35 percent polled would not allow any changes on the ground by the Palestinians.

More than 80 percent of the Palestinians supported turning to the UN to obtain a state.

It was unclear if the HU poll included Israeli residents of settlements in the West Bank.

Seventy-seven percent of Palestinians and 79 percent of Israelis believe that the US will veto a Palestinian move for the UN recognition, the survey said.
