The central coastal province of Khanh Hoa has decided to restore the Cau Ngu (Fish Worshipping) festival – a typical and common ritual of fishermen living in the coastal area – and to include it in the Nha Trang Sea Festival 2007 which is due to begin on June 9.

Cau Ngu is a traditional festival of the coastal communities stretching from Quang Binh to Kien Giang provinces. It originates from the traditional worship of Southern Sea God (Whale) believed to protect fishermen in case of emergency at sea.

Though the festival is held annually in more than 40 coastal villages in Khanh Hoa province, it is little known to the public.

The festival will be organised on a larger scale with grand ceremony to create a festive atmosphere for visitors. According to Musician Hoang Phuoc Lien, choreographer of the ceremony, about 750 artists, artisans and fishermen and 15 boats will be mobilised for rituals at sea and along Tran Phu Street. They will include a procession of flower-decorated vehicles, dragon dances, stage acts from Tuong (Classical Drama) and Ba Trao hymn singing performances.
