Besides Can Tho city, Chevron Vietnam will join VCSF to grant 390 similar scholarships to pupils with difficulties in the southern provinces of Kien Giang and Ca Mau. 

The scholarships are part of a 2011 sponsorship agreement between Chevron Vietnam, Japan’s Mitsui Oil Exploitation Co. Ltd (MOECO), Thailand’s PTT Exploitation and Production Co. Ltd (PTTEP) and the VCSF. 

The agreement aims to support Vietnamese education through programmes to grant scholarships to disadvantaged students and upgrade schools in five localities, namely Ca Mau, Kien Giang, Hau Giang, Bac Lieu and Can Tho. The total investment of these programmes is nearly VND3 billion. 

Chevron, MOECO and PTTEP are foreign investors of an offshore gas development project in Vietnam which provides gas for Ca Mau and Can Tho power plants. 

On the same day, the Tuoi tre (Youth) newspaper, in coordination with the GreenFeed Company, continued to implement a programme supporting farmers to take their children to school in the southern province of Dong Nai. 

The programme will provide 60 farmer households in six communes of Xuan Loc and Thong Nhat districts with zero-interest loans worth VND700 million in total from October 2011 to October 2013. 

According to the newspaper’s representative, the programme granted VND210 million to 180 farmer households in Long An, Binh Dinh and Hung Yen provinces.
