The Vietnam Railway Department is planning to build two railway routes linking Vietnam to Laos and Cambodia.

The projects are part of Vietnam’s transportation and railway development strategy by 2020, which has been approved by the Prime Minister and is also part of the plan to build a trans-Asia railway network in general and an ASEAN railway in particular.
Currently, the projects are undergoing studies.

Regarding the project to build a 130km-railway route linking Sai Gon-Loc Ninh to Cambodia, the department will co-ordinate with Chinese partners to conduct the studies.

The project to build a 119km-railway route linking Vung Ang-Mu Gia (central province of Ha Tinh) to Laos is estimated to require a total investment capital of VND4,523 billion.

Deputy Head of the Vietnam Railway Department, Nguyen Van Doanh said when the projects have been completed, they will open up huge opportunities in promoting transportation and trade between countries in the region.

In addition, the projects will help boost the economy in some localities, especially the area of Vung Ang port in the central province of Ha Tinh.

Mr Doanh said after completing the studies, the three countries will jointly build and operate border railway stations in the spirit of cooperation and in accordance with national regulations.
