Hanoi sees sharp rise in cases of hand-foot-mouth disease

VOV.VN - The number of people infected with hand-foot-mouth disease (HFM) has witnessed a sharp increase in Dong Anh district of Hanoi, with 27 new cases reported between August 31 and September 6 alone.

According to statistics from the local health centre, Dong Anh district has so far recorded a total of 288 cases of the HFM disease throughout 24 communes and towns.

The health centre has also detected 26 HFM outbreaks, including 12 outbreaks in the local community and 10 outbreaks in schools.

HFM is commonly caused by the Coxsackie virus (A16) and Enterovirus (EV17). Whilst cases of A16 are usually mild, the EV71 can cause neurological complications, making it five times more common than other types of virus caused by the disease.

To limit the number of HFM cases, children and adults should thoroughly wash their hands before eating and after using the toilet. This will contribute to preventing the risk of infections as well as maintaining hygiene both at home and in public areas, as the disease spreads through contact with human waste and bodily fluids.

At present there is no vaccine that can protect against HFM, and the best solution for patients to avoid complications is going to hospital to receive treatment.

The disease is widely considered to be highly dangerous as it can rapidly lead to fatal complications such as a decline in respiratory capacity, meningitis, and heart muscle inflammation. Treatment for HFM requires the use of respirators and blood dialysis.
