An Honorary Professor of the Hanoi National University has won the International Cosmos Prize 2008, a top award in ecology, for his achievements in biological classification and ecology of tropical mangrove forests, which have been recognized internationally.

Prof. Phan Nguyen Hong will receive a certificate of merit and a prize worth JPY40 million  (US$380,000 ) at an awards ceremony to be held in Osaka, Japan on November 4.

 

His research projects bear great significance to bio-diversification protection and prevention of global warming.


Prof. Hong is an Asian leader in research activities aimed at restoring and preserving mangrove forests in southern Vietnam, which were destroyed during the war or the current development process.


In his 50-year career, Mr Hong has contributed remarkably to the recovery of mangrove forests.
