Vietnam, Uruguay strengthen cooperative ties

(VOV) - Vietnam wants to promote friendship and multifaceted cooperation with Uruguay for mutual benefit and for peace, stability, cooperation and development in the two regions.

State Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan affirmed this in Hanoi on November 6 at talks with Uruguay Vice President, Danilo Astori, who is visiting Vietnam from November 5-8.

Mr Danilo is also President of Uruguay’s General Assembly and Chamber of Senators.

Ms Doan thanked Uruguay for its assistance during Vietnam’s past struggles for national independence and in its current construction and development.

She said she was pleased that Uruguay opened an embassy in Hanoi in 2011 and is considering recognizing Vietnam’s market economy status.

Vice President Doan also stated that there is great potential for cooperation between Vietnam and Uruguay in agriculture, livestock breeding, aquaculture, fisheries, and seafood processing, as well as information technology, telecommunications, tourism, and infrastructure construction. She urged Uruguay to create the best possible conditions for Vietnamese businesses to penetrate the country’s market.

Mr Danilo expressed his admiration for the Vietnamese people’s bravery during their past struggles for national independence and praised the country’s position and prestige in the international arena as well as its achievements during the renewal process.

He affirmed that Uruguay wants to boost cooperation with Vietnam in investment, agriculture, and processing agricultural products such as beef, fruit and red wine, and exporting them to Vietnam.

The two leaders agreed to accelerate the exchange of high-level visits and establish proper legal mechanisms and frameworks to promote multifaceted cooperation. They will hold regular political consultations between their two foreign ministries and support each other in international organizations and at multilateral forums.

They committed to support each other as candidates for the United Nations Human Rights Council in the 2014-2016 term and as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council, Uruguay for the 2016-2017 term and Vietnam for the 2020-2021 term.
