In the context of international economic integration, Vietnam should make flexible changes in its industrial policies to adapt itself to the new situation in compliance with the country’s development, said Professor Akira Suehiro from the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Tokyo at a seminar held in Hanoi on May 8.

The two-day seminar aims to share experiences in the establishment and implementation of industrial policies in Vietnam to serve the process of global competition and integration.

Mr Suehiro added that industrial policies are not meant to remain static forever and should be carried out under a specific goal for a certain period of time.

During the seminar, delegates also heard about Japan’s industrial policies on automobiles and reports from representatives of the Vietnam Ministry of Industry on its international economic integration, as well as orientations for the development of Vietnam’s industry sector till 2020.

Director of the Institute for Strategic Research and Industrial Policy Phan Dang Tuat said Vietnam’s industrial sector has remarkably developed over the past 20 years of renovation. The industrial development strategy from now to 2020 is focused on developing such highly competitive and labour-intensive industries as agro-forestry-fishery product processing, food stuffs and construction materials.

The seminar was co-organised by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry, the Japan Association for Overseas Technical Scholarship, and the Japan Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).
