The Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) has won in the first elections for councils at district, provincial and municipal levels held on May 17.

The CPP received 75 percent of the votes (8,545 ballots) at provincial and municipal levels and some 75 percent of the votes (8,470 ballots) at district level, according to preliminary results released by Cambodia’s National Council Committee.

The CPP was followed by the Sam Rainy Party, which accounts for about 20 percent of the votes at both provincial and district levels.  Both the Funcipec Party and the Norodom Ranarridh Party secured about four percent of the votes also at provincial and district levels.

The full results of the ballot counting will be announced on May 29.

These council elections are part of the Cambodian government ‘s efforts to transfer more power to local authorities.
