The Vietnamese Government has granted US$4 million in aid for the construction of a national sports centre in Laos.

A ground-breaking ceremony for the centre was held on May 19 in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister Somsavath Lengsavath.

The 11,700sq.m centre, located about 15 km to the north of the Laos capital of Vientiane, is expected to be completed in 2008.

The building will be used to train athletes for regional and international competitions, including the 25th Southeast Asian Games which is scheduled to take place in Laos in 2009.
