With socio-economic development achievements recorded in recent years, Vietnam should provide better care and allowances for all Agent Orange victims, said State President Tran Duc Luong during his working visit to the Vietnam Red Cross Society in Hanoi on April 11.

State President Tran Duc Luong, who is also Honorary President of the Vietnam Red Cross Society, called on Party Committees, authorities and people nationwide to provide better care for war victims, especially Agent Orange victims. He emphasised that the past wars have left serious consequences in Vietnam. The country now has more than 2 million AO victims including 200,000 children with innate deformities caused by the AO chemical. Most of them are facing a lot of difficulties in their daily lives. With socio-economic development achievements recorded in recent years, it is time to provide better care and allowances for all AO victims.

President Luong also supported the Vietnam Association of AO Victims (VAVA)’s lawsuit against US chemical companies. The lawsuit demanded compensation for AO victims and asked the US to participate in taking care of AO victims through charity activities. President Luong also asked the Society to actively support the lawsuit and mobilise all forces to help AO victims regularly. He noted that the Society should co-ordinate with relevant agencies to study and offer proper policies to persuade AO victims not to give birth to reduce AO consequences. He said this is a charity policy.

On the occasion, President Luong also highlighted the Society’s active efforts through its charity and relief activities to cope with recent calamities and help ease the pain of the victims’ families. He hoped that the Society will encourage more young people to participate in charity and international relief activities.
