Japan’s fictional characters arrive in Vietnam

Visitors have a chance to find out why such figures as Sailormoons, Doraemon, and Maruko or Hello Kitty and Namisuke have become so popular around the world when they visit an exhibition showcasing Japan’s cartoon characters in Hanoi from October 6 to 23.

The exhibition entitled ‘Japan: Kingdom of characters’, the first of its kind in Vietnam, will introduce Vietnamese visitors to this special ‘sub-culture’ of Japan.

Dao Thu Vinh, a visitor at the exhibition, said she was greatly impressed by the simple but effective arrangement of objects at the event. Vinh added that the exhibition has helped her understand more about Japanese culture and the characteristics of Japanese people.

Norihiko, Vice Director of the Japan Foundation Centre for Culture Exchange in Vietnam, said the Japanese government wanted to create these characters not purely for profits but also for sending positive messages.

Apart from Hanoi, the exhibition will also take place in Hue from November 2-13 and Ho Chi Minh City from November 25 to December 4.
