As a press agency of the Party and State, Radio the Voice of Vietnam (VOV) will do all on its own responsibility to contribute to combating social negative phenomena, particularly corruption and wastefulness.

This year’s June 21 marks the 81st anniversary of the Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day. During the past 81 years, the Vietnamese press has made great strides, significantly contributing to the struggle for national liberation and development.

On this occasion, VOVNews has interviewed VOV Deputy General Director and President of the VOV Journalists’ Association Chapter Le Dinh Dao about the role of the press.

Reporter: On the 81st anniversary of the Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day, could you speak about the role of the press, especially the broadcasting sector in the present-day social life?

Mr Dao: Since the Vietnam revolutionary press was initiated by late President Ho Chi Minh on June 21, 1925, it has played a pivotal role in the struggle for national liberation and unification. This role has been constantly heightened and developed in the on-going national renewal (Doi Moi) process.

As a press agency under the Party leadership, VOV has actively disseminated Party policies and guidelines and State legal information to all people. While implementing tasks assigned by the Party and State, VOV has always fulfilled its responsibility for disseminating information in the most effective and latest way, as well as reflecting people’s aspirations so that Party and State policies and guidelines can be brought to life and properly implemented.

Reporter: What is your assessment of the role of the press in fighting corruption and wastefulness?

Mr Dao: The press has not only fulfilled its political tasks but also played an important role in the fight against bureaucracy and corruption. Recently, the National Assembly approved two important laws: the Anti-corruption law and the Law on Thrift Practice and Waste Prevention.

The press in general, and VOV in particular, has actively disseminated the basic contents of the laws to all people in society.

As a mass medium, the press functions as a bridge between people and the Party. Through the press, people will understand the laws and help discover negative phenomena in socio-economic activities. As a press agency of the Party and State, VOV has done all it can to minimise negative phenomena in society, particularly in preventing corruption and wastefulness.

Reporter: As an effective medium, VOV has paid due attention to training reporters, particularly young reporters. Is there any development plan for the coming period?

Mr Dao: In recent times, VOV has chosen journalists whose ability and virtue meet requirements of the Vietnam Journalists Association. These journalists have promoted their ability while working at VOV. However, to become journalists and political activists, they have to take further training on politics in order to fully grasp Party guidlines and policies. They should make a great effort to train themselves to meet qualifications of revolutionary journalists.

As a press agency of the Party and Government, the management board and the journalists’ association of VOV have attached great importance to educating and training the radio staff so that they will be qualified both professionally and morally to meet requirements in the renewal process. VOV journalists are good at promulgating Party guidlines and policies as well as reporting people’s concerns to the Party and State for the purpose of achieving targets for a rich people, strong country and an equitable, democratic and civilised society.

Reporter: Thank you very much.
