Vietnam is prepared to set up a task force to enforce environmental protection rules, said officials from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE).

MoNRE Deputy Minister Pham Khoi Nguyen said environment protection cannot be successful without this new task force because the country lacks specific rules to discipline violators.

"MoNRE will prioritise building the task force for environmental protection while coordinating with the Ministry of Public Security to train the force with an expenditure of about US$ 940,000, said Mr Nguyen.

These two ministries last week discussed ways to build guideline documents to implement the Environment Law and environmental protection plan for 2007.

Deputy Minister of Public Security Nguyen Van Tinh said his ministry has finished five guideline documents, including circulars on how to build a report; proposals on environment impact assessment; rules for examining and inspecting environmental protection work; and documentation on a fund for environmental protection for the public security force.
