The final instalment of the "Harry Potter" series of children's books has been flying off the shelves in Ho Chi Minh City as demand for the much-anticipated novel has exceeded supply.

An average of 1,600 copies of the seventh and last book in the series, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” were sold each day in the southern city over the past week.

Ho Chi Minh City Book Distribution Corp. (Fahasa) said it sold out the 10,016 copies it had got from the company.

The books, which were sold at a retail price of nearly US$36, appeared in bookstores in HCM City and 14 other Vietnamese cities and provinces on July 21, the same day it premiered to children globally.

Since Joanne Kathleen Rowling wrote “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” in 1997, the books have achieved immense popularity, critical acclaim, and commercial success worldwide, inspiring films, video games and a flood of related merchandise.

The six titles published so far have sold more than 325 million copies and have been translated into 63 languages. The publishers have announced a record 12 million copies for the first print in the US alone.
