Removing all forms of discrimination against women to achieve gender equality was the main topic of a conference held in the northern port city of Hai Phong from August 12-13.

The participants also discussed policies and laws on gender equality as well as socio-economic development programmes in ethnic minority areas.
They agreed that ending discrimination and family violence should go hand in hand with socio-economic development programmes to help improve living standards, both materially and spiritually, for people in the disadvantaged areas.

The supervision of the NA and People’s Councils should be strengthened to put the Party and State’s policies on gender equality into practice, they stressed.

The conference, co-organised by the National Assembly’s Council for Ethnic Minorities and the UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), drew delegates from People’s Councils of northern mountainous provinces.
