Experts from the Vietnam Ministry of Defence and the US Department of Defence met in Hanoi on June 18-19 to discuss issues related to the US use of defoliants and herbicides during the war in Vietnam.

Vietnamese experts presented a report on activities to restore the environment surrounding Da Nang and Bien Hoa airports which were used to store the toxic chemicals. US experts announced the results of their study in the past two years and provided maps of areas where the chemicals were stored and diluted with water for use during the war.

This was the second seminar of its kind between Vietnam and the US.

At the first seminar in September 2005, the two countries discussed the restoration of those areas believed to be affected by dioxin.

Between 1961-1971, the US army sprayed approximately 80 million litres of toxic chemicals over the central and southern regions. The chemicals have continued to affect the environment and the health of millions of Vietnamese people.
