The two Foreign Ministers have agreed to strengthen economic and trade links between Vietnam and Australia on a par with their political relations.

On March 28, Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh held talks with his Australian counterpart Bob Carr to enhance bilateral relations in the lead up to the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

FM Minh praised Mr Carr’s first visit to Vietnam as a contribution to strengthening the comprehensive partnership, while affirming that Vietnam always attaches great importance to developing relations with Australia in various fields.

The two FMs expressed their delight at the strong development of the Vietnam-Australia comprehensive partnership and underlined the need to boost bilateral cooperation in education and training, labour and cross-cultural exchanges.

Vietnam wants to expand cooperation in the two countries’ potential areas such as tourism and culture and is expected to sign agreements on tourism visa and labour cooperation with Australia, said FM Minh.

He thanked the Australian government for maintaining its year-on-year increase of ODA for Vietnam, saying that Vietnam will closely coordinate in effectively implementing Australia-funded projects in Vietnam.

For his part, Australian FM Carr spoke highly of Vietnam’s achievements in boosting socio-economic development and expanding external relations, adding that his country regards Vietnam as one of its key partners in the Asia-Pacific region.

He said he is happy to see Australia-funded projects being carried out effectively in Vietnam and hopes that bilateral relations between the two countries will continue to grow and flourish in the future.

This visit aims to reaffirm the Australian government’s priority given to developing relations with Vietnam. By opening the Australian Consulate General in HCM City- Vietnam’s major economic hub, Australia is keen to enhance trade and investment cooperation with Vietnam, Mr Carr said.

During talks, the two FMs also compared notes on regional and international issues of common concern, affirming their wish to support each other at the UN and regional forums, such as the East-Asia Summit (EAS), the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) and the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM+) in preparation for the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP).

They also agreed to boost cooperation in dealing with natural disasters and coping with climate change.

Earlier, FM Carr attended the inauguration of the Australian Consulate General in HCM City, met with Minister of Planning and Investment Bui Quang Vinh, and paid a courtesy visit to State President Truong Tan Sang.
