The Port of Saigon in Ho Chi Minh City has so far this year handled more than 4.4 million tonnes of import and export goods, a 10 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

The figure included more than 2.34 million tonnes of import goods, a 56.6 percent year-on-year increase or 48.8 percent of the 2006 plan. The total goods exported through the port reached 854,000 tonnes, accounting for 27.6 percent of this year's plan or a 16.3 percent year-on-year decrease.

Increases were mainly seen in imported animal feed, clinker, chemicals, machines, gypsum and fertilisers. Meanwhile, the import of container cargo, wheat, and metal products decreased.
