The Ministry of Health announced on October 28 that it will carry out a thorough inspection of food products imported into Vietnam from China, including eggs.

The ministry released the warning following the news that food inspectors in Hong Kong had discovered eggs imported from China to be contaminated with high levels of melamine.

Test results showed that the level of melamine in Chinese eggs reached as high as 4.7ppm which is double the authorised level in food and tens of times higher than the level found in milk products in Vietnam.

At an urgent meeting between the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on October 28, experts said it is difficult to control the transport of Chinese eggs as they are illegally imported into Vietnam.

A health official said his ministry has not yet taken any samples from the imported eggs for tests.
