Vietnam won six more gold medals on December 7 and another nine on December 8, the first two official days of the 24th Southeast Asian Games in Thailand, rising to 2nd place on the tally with 23 gold medals in total.

Cyclist Nguyen Thi Thanh Huyen bagged the first gold medal for Vietnam on the day in the women’s field terrain event. She had won the title at the 20th, 21st, 22nd SEA Games and the Asian championships in 2002.

After Huyen’s success, sprinter Truong Thanh Hang brought home another gold medal in the women’s 1,500m event. This is the first gold secured by the track and field team at the Games.

Being clocked at 4:11:60, Hang was the first athlete to break a record at the 24th SEA Games. The former record of 4:18:50 was set by Hang herself at the last Games held in the Philippines.

Hang’s teammate Bui Thi Hien snatched a bronze in the event with a total time of 4: 22:55. Vu Thi Huong added to the success of the track and field team with a gold medal in the women’s 100m race after finishing in 11:47.

Meanwhile, wrestlers pocketed all three gold medals in the men’s and women’s free events. The medallists included Pham Thi Hue (women’s 48-51kg category), Dang Thi Van (women’s 48kg category) and Man Ba Xuan (men’s 74-84 kg category).

Vietnam’s petanque athletes also won two bronze medals on December 7.
