Vietnam will have to submit the preliminary list of athletes competing at the 15th Asian Sports Games (ASIAD) in Qatar, scheduled for November 2006, in July and the official list must be sent to ASIAD Organsing Board no later than October 30. The organising board’s recent announcement caused national teams to work harder to fulfil recruitment work.

According to the Vietnam Sports and Physical Training Committee, the announcement affected the preparatory plans of Vietnamese sport teams, especially in the recruitment process. Therefore, the selection will be conducted from now till early July so that a preliminary list of athletes will be sent to the Vietnam Sports Committee for consideration. Normally, the best athletes are selected after national tournaments, which take place towards the year’s end.

Although Qatar has announced that it will cover accommodation and transport costs and 30 return tickets for each participating country, the official figure will not be released until the Asian Olympic Council meets. Accordingly, the Vietnam Sports Committee has not decided on the two options of either sending 480 people (including 339 athletes) to compete in 26 events, or 247 people (including 155 athletes) to compete in 16 events at the games

Vietnam has high hopes of winning gold medals in taekwondo, karatedo, wushu, body-building, billiard-snooker and wrestling.
