The Hanoi-based National Library, which keeps Vietnam’s most treasured valuable documents, was awarded the Independence Order, second class, during its 90th anniversary celebrations.

The distinction was presented to the library by State Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan at a ceremony on November 25.

Originally the Indochina Central Library founded in 1917 under the French colonialist regime, the library now possesses 1.3 million book titles.

Of these valuable documents are more than 217,000 books, 1,067 newspaper and magazine copies published in Vietnam since 1992, and 13,000 doctoral theses by Vietnamese during 1954-2007.

Since 1992, it built 61 IT rooms for provincial libraries nationwide, creating an information technology network for the public library system.

In 2000, it became an official member of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA).
