A conference was held in Hanoi on September 8 to launch a US$26.7 million anti-HIV/AIDS project for young people during the 2006-2011 period.

This is the largest anti-HIV/AIDS programme ever conducted in Vietnam, said Le Thi Thu, Minister and Chairman of the National Committee on Population, Family and Children.

The Vietnamese Government has pledged to contribute US$6.7 million to the programme, while the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has offered a US$20 million.

The two-phase project will focus on raising young people's awareness of the pandemic in 15 provinces and cities listed as "hotbeds" and encourage them to take preventive measures so as to prevent the spread of the disease.

In the first phase, the project will be piloted in five northern provinces and cities, including Hanoi. In the second phase, it will expand to another ten provinces and cities, mostly in the central and southern regions.

The project will also offer high-risk youngsters more access to preventive devices like condoms and disposable syringes, said Omkar Shrestha, Deputy Director of ADB Vietnam.
