The ballet West Side Story, based on the musical which won 10 Oscars in 1961, will make its debut in Hanoi next weekend.

American choreographer Lisa Travis developed the concept for the ballet, a modern telling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, where young lovers dwell in New York’s West Side and their families are embroiled in a racial conflict.

The Vietnam National Opera and Ballet (VNOB)’s best dancer, Cao Chi Thanh, will star as Tony and Quynh Nga will play Maria. Thi Ngoc and Duc Toan will take on the roles of Riff and Bernado, respectively.

"This is the second time I’ve taken the role of Tony. The first time was when I studied in Hong Kong. Yet the role remains a challenge for me," Thanh said. "The hardest part for me is Mambo dancing when Tony joins a festival."

The 30-minute ballet is included in the VNOB’s first bill of the year, entitled A Romantic New Year.

In the other part of the program, audiences will be treated to a special concert featuring the works of Mendelssohn and Brahms. American pianist Daniel Perkins, violinist Tuan Anh and cellist Thu Van will play Mendelssohn’s piano trio. The VNOB’s choir will sing four gypsy songs by Brahms.

The program, conducted by Perkins, will open at the Hanoi Opera House at 8 pm, on January 12 and 13.
