State Vice President Truong My Hoa has called on young overseas Vietnamese to preserve national identity and cultural characteristics and help foreign friends learn more about Vietnam.

The Vice President on July 19 warmly received a delegation of 60 young overseas Vietnamese coming from 22 countries around the world to attend the Summer Camp 2007 in Vietnam. Ms Hoa said this was a valuable opportunity for young overseas Vietnamese to increase their understanding of the country’s history and culture as well as the Vietnamese language.

She briefed the participants on the country’s socio-economic situation in the Doi Moi (Renewal) process and Vietnam’s economic growth rate, which ranks second in Asia. People’s living standards have been improved thanks to investments from overseas Vietnamese. She emphasised that in 2006, Vietnam successfully organised the 14th APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting. The country’s position was raised in the international arena after joining the World Trade Organisation. In addition, Vietnam is the only candidate to be nominated as a non-permanent member of UN Security Council for the 2008-2009 term. Overseas Vietnamese have greatly contributed to these achievements, she said.

On behalf of the delegation, Nguyen Quoc An from the English High School Sophia from Bulgaria and Duong Thuy Ha, a student from a gifted maths class in Kiev, Ukraine expressed their honour to visit the homeland and thanked Vice President Truong My Hoa for spending her time meeting with them and sharing information on the country’s current situation as well as making her close recommendations to them.
