Russian News Agencies have announced that Chechen rebel leader Shamil Basayev, Russia's most wanted man, was killed on the threshold of the G8 Summit. The slaying of the notorious terrorist showed Russia’s initial success in the anti-terrorist fight.

Russian News Agencies Interfax and RIA Novosti said Basayev was killed in an operation conducted by special forces in Ingushetia, a region bordering Chechnya.

FSB security agency chief Nikolai Patrushev said Basayev and other Chechen armed rebels were killed when they were preparing to launch an attack near Ekajevo village in Ingushetia in an attempt to destroy the image of Russia on the thresthold of the G8 summit which will open in St Petersburg this weekend. His death was also confirmed by a Chechen separatist organisation on the Internet. Meanwhile, there has been a positive response from Russian and International public opinion to the death of terrorist Basayev.

Russian President Vladimir Putin described this as Russia’s great military exploit in the fight against terrorism. He said the slaying of Basayev was a punishment fitting terrorist crimes against innocent children in Beslan and victims in Budonsk.

In a recent press conference, President Bush highlighted Russia’ efforts in annihilating Basayez, saying he had deserved the punishment. This was also desribed as Russia’s important victory in the war on terror. For many years, there had been a big question about “Whether Russia could crush terrorist plots and Basayev?” as Basayev was Russia’s most wanted man and a dangerous terrorist. He was also the man who masterminded the Beslan school hostage siege in September 2004, causing the deaths of 375 people including 186 children. He also organised a number of bloody attacks in Russia. Therefore, the victory marked Russia’s great efforts in the anti-terrorist campaign, especially when the G8 Summit - the most important political event of the year - is going to open.

In recent times, many nations in the world including Russia are facing potential terrorist threats. For example, four Russian diplomats were abducted and murdered just a few days ago. Therefore, Russia is paying special attention to strengthening its power in the anti-terrorist field, especially when Chechen rebels tend to collaborate with the Al Qaeda network. In February, Russian President Putin signed a decision on establishing the anti-terrorist committees at the central and local levels. The Lower and Upper Houses of the Russian Parliament also passed a bill authorizing anti-terrorist action abroad. Under the bill, the Russian army can attack terrorist targets abroad and the President will be given more power in the anti-terrorist field. It is apparent that Russia is taking necessary measures to ensure national security and contribute to consolidating common security in the region and the world.
