India successfully test fired its nuclear-capable surface-to-surface Agni-1 missile on March 23, according to news agencies.

The Agni-1 missile, which has a range of more than 700 kilometres, was fired at 10:15 am (local time) from the Wheelers' Island, a defence base in the Bay of Bengal on Orissa coast.

 

The medium-range ballistic missile, weighing about 12 tonnes, that can be fired from mobile launchers and is capable of carrying both conventional as well as nuclear warheads of 1,000kg.

 

Last April, India staged a successful test of Agni-III, its longest range ballistic missile capable of transporting a nuclear warhead more than 3,000 kilometres.
