A total of 22 Vietnamese people have tested positive for the A/H1N1 virus in Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai province, and Hanoi by 11am, June 16, said Health Minister Nguyen Quoc Trieu.

Five of them have been discharged from hospital, Mr Trieu added.

On the same day, the minister met northern Vietnam’s first A/H1N1 flu patient, who is being treated at the National Institute for Infectious and Tropical Diseases.

The patient, a Hanoi citizen, returned to Vietnam from the US on June 5, when he showed A/H1N1 symptoms, including fever. On June 9, he was confirmed to have the serious flu. However, his health has been much improved since then.

The patient has phoned those who had been in contact with him previously and told them to get medical check-ups.

The Ministry of Health has a comprehensive contingency plan in place to deal with a possible flu pandemic in humans.
