An art exchange programme was held in Hanoi on November 6 to celebrate the 30th founding anniversary of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS).

In his opening speech, Most Venerable Thich Quang Tung, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha Central Committee’s Executive Board said through different periods of history, the VBS has always encouraged monks and nuns to live a good religious and moral life.

Many speakers recalled the merger of nine Buddhist sects and organisations into the VBS 30 years ago and highlighted the VBS’s active contributions to charity work with a view to improving the plight of street children, HIV-infected and disabled children, and orphans in the country.

The orphan-turned nun, Thich Nu Lien Thanh, said with love for Buddhism, she has tried her best to help poor people in the southern province of Binh Duong.

Nun Dam Lan from Bo De pagoda said she has named every orphan in the pagoda, hoping that wherever they go later, they will always remember where they have been brought up.

The Vice President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee (VFFCC), Nguyen Van Pha expressed belief that with its strong growth over the past 30 years, the VBS will continue to travel along with the whole nation and actively engage in national great unity movements launched by the front.
