Hanoi’s efforts to reduce poverty in ethnic communes pay off

Hanoi’s endeavours to lift 14 ethnic minority communes out of poverty have reaped positive results, slashing the household poverty rate from 18.55% in 2011 to 5%.

The outcomes were revealed at a meeting reviewing the implementation of the municipal Party Committee’s resolution 06-NQ/TU dated October 30, 2011 on socio-economic development in the mountainous ethnic communities of Hanoi.

The Vietnamese capital city is now home to more than 68,000 ethnic minority individuals, most of whom reside in 14 communes of the districts of Ba Vi, Thach That, Quoc Oai, My Duc and Chuong My.

Over the past four years, Hanoi has prioritised resources for the effort, such as spending over VND1.27 trillion (US$56.45 million) on building 202 socio-economic infrastructure facilities, VND92 billion (US$4.08 million) on constructing 46 cultural centres and VND101 billion (nearly US$4.5 million) on five power equipment upgrade projects.

As a result, all benefiting localities are now accessible by car and equipped with irrigation systems. Many of them farm profitable industrial and crop plants and have formed concentrated agricultural production areas.

They also post an annual economic growth rate of more than 10%, according to a report presented at the meeting.
