Vietnam has moved up from 20th position five years ago to eighth among the countries with students studying in the US, according to the Open Doors Report 2011.

The number of Vietnamese students at US establishments rose 14 percent in the 2010-2011 academic year to 14,888, said the report, which was released by the Institute of International Education in partnership with the US Department of State.

The US Ambassador to Vietnam, David B. Shear, considers this a positive sign for bilateral cooperation in education between the two countries.

He said he hopes even more Vietnamese students will come to study in the US, even though Vietnam already has the most students of all the Southeast Asian countries now studying in the US.

Shear promised to help Vietnamese students find suitable educational establishments, adding that the US earmarks one million dollars per year as scholarships for Vietnamese students.

According to Shear, each Vietnamese student in the US acts as a cultural ambassador for Vietnam and helps promote bilateral ties between the two countries.
