The court in northern Tuyen Quang province on December 25 handed down death sentences to three members of a major drug smuggling ring, which had operated in Hanoi and some northern provinces since 1995.


Truong Phat Hoa, Pham Van Tuan and Pham Van Duong were convicted of illegally possessing and trading in military weapons.


Six other defendants, Pham Xuan Loc, Sung Quang Phan, Nguyen Tien Nuoi, Hoang Van Mao, Pham Thi Duc and Nguyen Ba Ly, were sentenced to life imprisonment, and forty to a total of 283 years in prison for the same charges. Only one defendant was granted a suspended sentence.


The ring was accused of trafficking 836.8 kilogrammes of opium, nine cakes of heroin, 70 short guns and hundreds of bullets.
