The Republic of Korea (RoK) and China have agreed to promote bilateral cooperation in politics, economics and other issues, including the denuclearisation process on the Korean peninsula.

The agreement was reached during talks in Seoul on August 25 between RoK President Lee Myung-Bak and Chinese President Hu Jintao, who arrived there the same day for an official two-day visit.

In a joint statement released after the talks, Presidents Hu and Lee affirmed that the two countries will increase the exchange of visits by their senior military officials and hold their first high-level strategic talks this year. They also vowed to fully implement the six-party agreement on the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula.

During Mr Hu’s visit, China and the RoK are expected to sign a number of cooperative agreements on energy conservation, high technology, economics, trade and education.

China is the RoK’s biggest trade partner with two-way trade reaching US$145 billion in 2007. The RoK had invested US$22.54 billion in China by the end of 2007. The two countries are considering the possibility of signing a bilateral free trade agreement.

After Seoul, Mr Hu will visit Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.
