The people of Can Tho city have been urged to help the local authorities to cope with climate change after a meeting between the UK-based Challenge to Change (CtC) organization, the US Rockefeller Foundation, and the local authorities on August 6.

Recent surveys have found that residents in the Mekong Delta city have not taken the issue seriously.

The working session focused on the impact of climate change on Can Tho’s Vinh Thanh and Binh Thuy districts, which are said to be the most at risk, and their capacity to respond to the problem is limited.

The meeting was part of the the “Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network” project – an initiative jointly conducted by the CtC and the Rockefeller Foundation in Vietnam, Thailand, India and Indonesia.

The CtC and the Rockefeller Foundation have chosen Can Tho to implement their initiative because analysts have predicted that almost all of the city could be submerged in the next 20 years.
