The UNDP is making efforts to raise US$10 million for Vietnam to clean dioxin-polluted hotbeds, said Tran Xuan Thu, Deputy President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Agent Orange/dioxin Victims Association, at a press briefing in Hanoi on August 4.

The campaign has received positive response from several American and Swedish organisations so far, he added.

Three US companies, namely Ford, Orion and Bem, are conducting research on detoxification measures for A Luoi district, a hotbed in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue, and the surroundings of Da Nang Airport in the central province of Da Nang, Phu Cat Airport in the central province of Binh Dinh, and Bien Hoa Airport in the southern province of Dong Nai.

Vietnamese scientists also developed a State-funded project to detoxify these hotbeds, which is expected to be operational from late this year to 2007.

Many scientists from Germany, France, Japan, the Netherlands, Canada and Russia have taken soil samples from southern Vietnam to test dioxin levels. They confirmed that these areas have the highest density levels of toxin in the world due to thick spraying by US army during the war.

Time and high humidity have considerably reduced the dioxin in the earth. However, former US military bases, including the above-mentioned airports, still suffer serious dioxin contamination with hundreds of thousands of parts per trillion (ppt), according to scientists.
