The consultative committee on Man and Biosphere has agreed to the proposed Kien Giang Biosphere Reserves, the Kien Giang provincial People’s Committee reported on August 30.

The 1.1-million hectare Kien Giang Biosphere Reserves are proposed for the three core zones of U Minh Thuong National Park, Phu Quoc National Park and Kien Luong-Kien Hai coastal protected forest.

The biosphere reserves are mainly tropical forests which are home to many endangered flora and fauna.

The official recognition of the biosphere reserves will be announced at the 19th session of the International Co-ordinating Council on the Man and Biosphere Programme in Paris in October following the UNESCO general director’s decision.
