More than 30 contagious diseases such as Ebola, HIV/AIDS, avian influenza, and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) have been detected during the past 20 years and some of them have no remedies and vaccines, according to scientists at a conference in Hanoi on November 27.

About 90 scientists from 30 Pasteur Institutes all over the world warned countries of the recurrence of several contagious diseases including anthrax, rabies, cholera, typhoid, Rubela, polio and dengue fever. They said the increasing trend of international exchange and integration is the major cause for the rapid spread of these diseases. Therefore, they called on all countries to improve epidemiological capacity and tests to early detect and prevent the occurrence of the diseases.

The scientists shared experience and results of new research projects and discussed measures to prevent and contain these diseases.

Addressing the conference, Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Health Trinh Quan Huan said that with its efforts and experience in controlling SARS and flu type A-H5N1, and the assistance of the international community, Vietnam, including Pasteur institutes, would be able to control and wipe out infectious diseases.
