For the first time, a Vietnamese artist has won the hearts and minds of the Russian audience, playing the Dan Bau - a typical Vietnamese musical instrument – in a Russian TV contest on October 5.

During a live broadcast on Channel 1, Emeritus Artist Nguyen Thi Kim Anh from the Voice of Vietnam Radio performed instrumental pieces The Beautiful Volga River of Russia and The Spring in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. Her performance received thunderous applause from the jury and the audience.

“Wonderful! I voted for this performance to go to the next round,” said People’s Artist Philipp Kirkorov, a member of the jury.

Famous writer Tachiana Tolstaia said, “She succeeded in playing a Russian folksong using the traditional Vietnamese musical instrument. Her performance conquered my heart.”

Alexander Peskov, the third member of the jury, said, “It was amazing. I agreed to vote for her.”

Tuan Khanh, a Vietnamese national, who watched artist Anh’s performance, said, “I am very proud when Vietnam’s distinctive cultural identity was introduced to the Russian audience. I believe that her performance will receive strong support from Russian people as well as the Vietnamese community in Russia.”

To qualify for the next round, artist Anh will have to wait for the voting results from the public. According to contest organisers, they received a lot of phone calls from Russian people and Vietnamese nationals voting for her performance while she was playing the pieces.

The Minute of Glory contest is Channel 1’s special project which is designed to discover and nurture new talent. The winner of the contest will receive a US$40,000 prize.
