The 11th ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Minerals (ASOMM 11) is expected to approve an action plan on regional mineral cooperation in the 2011-2015 period, says Dr. Nguyen Van Thuan, Head of the General Department of Geology and Minerals of Vietnam (DGMV).

“The ASEAN action plan will deal with urgent issues in the mining sector through multilateral cooperation projects,” Thuan said at the opening session of the ASOMM meeting in Hanoi on December 7.

He appreciated the effective cooperation among ASEAN member countries in mineral exploration and suggested establishing a common fund for the region’s environmental issues.

Participants discussed measures to ensure sustainable development in mining, as well as methods for attracting more investment in the industry.

Initiatives and proposals were made to boost mining cooperation in the region and help the mining industry become one of the leading economic sectors in the bloc.

They will also decide on the schedule for the next meeting.

The Deputy Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Nguyen Ngoc Linh, highlighted the effective implementation of mining projects, saying they have helped strengthen regional cooperation in this field.

ASOMM 11 is part of the third ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Minerals (AMMin 3), scheduled for December 6-10.
