Vietnamese, Indonesian students win int’l prize

A Vietnamese and Indonesian high school student have each won an international innovation contest which concluded in London early this month.

Vietnamese student Pham Huong Thao and Indonesian Kathleen Valencia Hartono were awarded the high-school version of the Hult Prize, which was created for MBA students three years ago by Hult International Business School and the Clinton Global Initiative.

Candidates from around the globe put forward numerous innovative solutions to solving water crises at the competition.

The two winners, enrolled at EF International Academy Oxford, introduced a brilliantly simple energy-saving water purification method that only requires large containers, faucets, and chemicals.

This technique costs a mere US$10 to $15 and can purify 800 to 2,400 liters of water a day.

Thao and her schoolmate will attend an awards ceremony in New York City in September and will have a chance to meet former US President Bill Clinton and other international leaders.

Last year, Time Magazine selected the Hult Prize as one of the top five ideas to change the world.
