The November consumer price index (CPI) has unexpectedly soared by 1.23 percent from last month, making the CPI of the past 11 months increase by 7.92 percent compared with the same period last year, said Nguyen Duc Thang, Vice Head of the Trade and Price Department under the General Statistics Office.

Experts attribute these hikes to loose control of food and fuel prices, and disasters and epidemics faced by Vietnam. Food prices have been greatly affected by bird flu and difficulties in transport after floods.

In November, the CPI increased in nine of ten product groups, particularly food and related services (2.06 percent), and housing and construction material (1.87 percent). The lowest rise was reported in transport and postal services (0.02 percent).

The CPI is predicted to increase sharply in December due to the rising price of petrol, rising basic wages and high demand for consumption by the end of the year.
