Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung began a two-day official visit to Cambodia on December 18 to foster the friendship and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries. The visit is made at the invitation of Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Hunsen.

Vietnam and Cambodia established diplomatic ties on June 24, 1967. Since 1993, bilateral ties  have constantly developed in various areas. The two sides have conducted many high-level exchange visits including the visits to Cambodia by former Party General Secretary Le Kha Phieu, former State President Le Duc Anh and former State President Tran Duc Luong and the visit to Vietnam by  former Cambodian King Norodom Sihanouk. Particularly, during Party leader Nong Duc Manh’s visit to Cambodia in March 2005, the two sides agreed to develop bilateral relations towards "good neighbourliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation and long-term stability."

Recently, a number of official visits were made by the two countries’ leaders including Cambodian PM Hunsen’s visit to Vietnam in October 2005 during which the two sides signed a Supplementary Treaty to the 1985 Agreement on National Border Demarcation. They also included the Cambodia visits by former PM Phan Van Khai and Deputy PM Nguyen Sinh Hung in March 2006 and September 2006, respectively and the Vietnam visit by Cambodian Deputy PM and Minster of Foreign Affairs Hor Nam Hong.

In addition, ministries, sectors and localities of the two countries also conducted exchange visits to boost bilateral cooperation.

Vietnam and Cambodia have paid due attention to boosting cooperation in national defense and security to effectively resolve issues on land and sea borderlines.

The first and second conferences on cooperation and development among Vietnamese and Cambodian border provinces in 2004 and 2005 drew up a new cooperation mechanism to ensure security along their common border.

The two countries set up a joint committee for economic, cultural, scientific and technological cooperation in April 1999, which has held eight sessions so far. At each session, the two sides reviewed the implementation of their cooperation plans in such areas as economics, politics, trade, military and security and discussed plans for the coming years.

Over the past years, relations between the two countries have born fruit in many areas of cooperation. Two-way trade turnover has increased remarkably from US$180 million in 2000 to US$185 million in 2001, US$240 million in 2002, US$350 million in 2003, US$515 million in 2004, US$692 million in 2005. The  figure is expected to amount to US$800 million by the end of this year.

The two countries have agreed on measures to boost their economic and trade cooperation with a view to achieving US$2 billion in trade turnover by 2010.

Vietnam and Cambodia have also strengthened their cooperation in potential areas such as education and training, energy, electricity, healthcare and transport. Cooperation among sister cities and those along the common borderline has been boosted.

In addition, Vietnam and Cambodia have accelerated cooperation in the framework of the Association of Southeast Asian nations (ASEAN), the Mekong River Commission (MRC), Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS), West-East Corridor (WEC), Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS), and the Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia development triangle.
