Astronomy lovers in Vietnam will have the chance to witness two interesting natural phenomena in June: a partial lunar eclipse and the planet Venus traversing across the face of the Sun.

The partial lunar eclipse is due to begin at 5pm (local time) on June 4 and reach its peak at 6.03pm, when about 37 percent of the moon will be covered by shadow. The eclipse will end at 7.06pm the same day.

The other special astronomical event is the planet Venus traversing across the face of the Sun over seven hours which will start on the evening of June 5 and last till early morning of the next day (in the northern hemisphere). During this time Venus will appear as a black dot silhouetted against the Sun.

Most people in the world will be able to observe this phenomenon, which can be seen again in another 105 years.

The Vietnam Astronomy and Space Association has warned that people should not stare directly at the sun to watch the Venus event as that can badly damage the corneas and even cause blindness.
